At first glance they seem austere, with white walls and works of art that are worryingly too close tempting fate and damage as we walk past them. There’s also the concern that a gallery assistant will give you the hard sell to buy a painting. If you’ve experienced this before, it can certainly put you off going again. But art galleries are changing.

You might have noticed an art gallery store popping up in your town, or the interest in contemporary art growing among your friends and family. You might even be finding you’re having conversations about favorite artists with people you wouldn’t expect to have such an interest.

There is a perceived exclusivity to owning artistic works such as paintings and sculpture, mainly because of price. Art is for everyone, irrelevant of background or income. Yes, many pieces will be out of our budgets, but there are ways around this. Most galleries have a loan scheme whereby they offer 0% interest on loans for the sole purpose of buying art.

If you’re asking the question, “why do I want a piece of art that costs so much I need to get a loan for it?” then consider this; how much would you spend on music, or gig tickets, or DVDs? Art is essentially another form of entertainment, speaking to you in a similar way as your favorite band, or film.

The Right Art to Buy

The old adage, “I don’t know if it’s art, but I know what I like,” is very true. Art collectors will develop some savvy about pieces that would make great investments based on the artist or number of prints in a limited run. Other people worry about what will go with the décor: “There’s a lot of blue in this painting, and my sofa’s red.” So what? Enjoy the piece. That should be the priority.

If you are considering buying a piece of contemporary art, do some research. Familiarize yourself with the art world today. Maybe you are particularly drawn to figurative work by artists such as Jack Vetteriano or Fabien Perez, or abstracts by artists like Danielle O’Connor Akiyama. It’s often too much information to take on board when simply searching online, so gallery staff are particularly useful for talking to about current artists and styles.

Find out more about where the artists studied, any awards they might have won, or particular subjects or locations they prefer to paint. Understanding more about the artist often gives you a better grasp of the painting, giving it a completely different dimension from how you saw it originally.

The Enid Hutt Gallery is located in Scotland and sells a wide range of contemporary paintings such as Jack Vettriano artworks

Everybody would not be knowing what an infographic is? Well, it is a visual way to communicate your message to the target audiences by mixing text and graphics creatively. It is one of the latest means to create brand awareness in the market, one can notice increased traffic towards their website or blog with the use of infographics. As the name states, these are informational graphics that looks appealing to the viewers and entice them to read more. The info text can be wrapped up creatively in the form of graphics and presented to the viewers. Number of stories can be created with the help of these textual graphics. One can add some facts and figures about his product or brand to make it highly visual and informative for the viewers.

In marketing, either we use text or graphics to convey our message, but both have certain limitations with the target audience. Creating a mix of both text and graphics can just work wonders to communicate your story to huge audience. This is the reason Infographics are ‘IN’. People look forward to more visual information than lengthy content on the website or any print advertisement. Thus, the advertisers have started making use of these graphics to manipulate the viewers into believing that the product would significantly improve their lives. They also try to make them believe that if they do not use the products, something bad would happen.

Information can be effectively communicated through graphics and one can give extra info using captivating text that is relevant and to-the-point. Anything that is boring in your marketing campaigns won’t work now. People get attracted to innovative ideas and illustrations that are easy to grasp, which cannot be conveyed mere through the text.

Infographics are getting popular in the marketing industry, whether its print media or web. The webmasters are sharing infographics on their websites or blogs to grab more and more attention of the visitors. These can make them stand alone among the other competitors. The same can be used for promotions by sharing them on social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. While blogging, the infographics can be used as banners or in the signature to create more brand awareness. Combining a strong message with a persuasive infographic would prove to be an asset in your marketing campaign, if used effectively. Make sure, you do not use crowded graphic or confusing text in your infographic, else it will leave a bad impression in the mind of the viewers.

Guess what? You can.

Word allows its users to customize their own keyboard shortcuts and create commands for their most used functions, macros, styles, symbols and even fonts. And if Word already has a shortcut in place that you don’t like, you can change it.

Creating your own keyboard shortcuts or changing the keyboard shortcuts already created by Word is very simple, and you can assign and reassign shortcuts as you see fit. The following is a step-by-step guide on how to customize your keyboard.

Step 1: Open a new blank document.

Step 2: In the Tools drop down, select Customize Keyboard. A pop up window will appear.

Step 3: On the top left, you will see a list of categories. On the top right, you will see a list of commands. When you highlight a category, the list of command will change to match the commands that are used for that category. Underneath both of these boxes is a Current Keys box. This box shows you what the current key commands are. For example, if you wanted to File Close, you would hit Command + W.

Step 4: If you want to change a command, make sure you have the rich command highlighted. Then, place your cursor into the Press New Keyboard Shortcut box. When in the box, press the new command keys you wish to assign to that command. If the command you choose is currently assigned to something else, it will pop up underneath it.

There is also a description field under the New Keyboard Shortcut box. This field gives you a brief description of what the command does. This way, if you come across a command you don’t know, you will know its purpose.

Step 5: After you have entered your command keys, hit the Assign button to the right of the box. When you are done, hit the OK button at the bottom. This will save your changes.

Step 6: If you wish to remove a command, highlight the command in the Current Keys box, and hit the Remove button to the right. This will delete the command. You then have to hit the OK button at the bottom to save your changes.

You can continue to assign and reassign your commands until you are happy with your key commands. If you ever wish to change your keyboard shortcuts, you can do so at any time by simply performing these steps again.

If you’re going to create your own keyboard shortcuts, it’s a good idea to try and make them easy to remember and easy to implement. You don’t want to have to use seven different keys to make one simple command.

Implementing keyboard shortcuts will help alleviate you from using your mouse to make easy commands, which will make your time spent writing much shorter.

There are several things that are illusionary and we use them normally to impress our target audience. Thinking creatively is not a course you need to learn, it is just the imagination that you can use by stepping out of your mental boundaries.

When it comes to designing, the clients always say- I want something ‘out of the box’. And here starts the real problem because they do not define what exactly they want, they just say that it has to be unique and attractive to the target audience. The designers try all their unusual ideas, sometimes they come up with the weirdest ones. In this process of creative thinking, they just cant define whether they are inside or outside the box. Everything has its merits and demerits, and when you try anything new, you just keep your fingers crossed. Same case follows with the designers, the result gets disclosed when the client approves or disapproves the design. Here are some situations that the designers generally face while ‘thinking out of the box’.

Creates Confusion

Coming up with new and innovative idea could confuse the client. The clients who do not understand the concept of modern art would keep on arguing with the designer. The designer would also argue with the client about the directions and clues he gave to create new design. At last, both of them would end up cursing for the time wasted on such an unusual design. In such case the designer should have tactics to convince or confuse the client about the design he asked to create. There is very common phrase that says – if you cant convince them, confuse them!

Unable to value your time

Thinking about new concept and modern design definitely takes time, but if it is not approved by the client, its is just waste of time. The designers should think that the client is not going to pay you extra penny for your ‘out of the box thinking’, so it is better for them to spend standard time in playing with new concept. The designer needs to spend extra time on designing only if the client is willing to pay more for your time consumed in designing such Avant-garde.

Impressing the target audience is a Must

Another most important aspect you need to consider while designing is that it should attract the target audience as well. As if somehow you manage to impress your client, but the design do not reaches to the target audience, then there are maximum chances of rejections at the client’s end.

The web designer attunes his creative pursuits to the usability experience of the client’s target audiences; the latter (usability) being the success report card of any website.

A savvy web designer gives expression to the client’s ideas to arrive at the goal of either selling a product/service, subscribing to newsletters, e-magazines or downloading relevant software/content or even creating awareness about an issue. Most websites double as the online avatar of a brick and mortars business, some are there to appeal to the global populace and the rest to provide expression to creative ideas.

Tips For Planning A Website Design:

Keeping the purpose in mind a web designer begins the work of designing a user friendly website. Therefore, while the designer in onto the planning phase, it would make sense if he/she could consider a few tips:

1. Stress upon the creative brief as some clients may not be verbose; grill out the answers if you must. This will put the client’s needs in perspective and make your work easier later while interpreting the same.

2. Seek feedback at each level of the web site designing process to ascertain that you are on the right track. Designers have known to receive a raw deal due to feature creep wherein the clients insists on including elements previously not discussed. Hence, test elements, bounce ideas off of the client to ensure that you think alike or on the same wavelength.

3. Put your ideas onto a paper so that you can refer them whenever required. It also makes sense as you can incorporate whatever changes you need as and when you proceed. Although some designers prefer to directly use their computer for design planning process, sketching is a good habit as it allows the person to be creative without restrictions. Though there are no fast and rule here ‘- it all depends upon the designer’s comfort level with the medium.

4. Usability experience counts much more on the website’s success scale. Add features to the website keeping in mind the audience’s needs. A website crammed with visual elements such as animated graphics, large image size leading to slow loading time take the joy away from a satisfactory browsing experience.

5. Follow the 80 -20 Rule i.e. use 20% of the website elements that offer 80% information to the user. Be minimalistic while using different elements. Use only those elements that are useful and scrap off the things that you deem unnecessary to the user. This will work wonders as the users will not be misguided by clutter.

6. Content should also follow a similar rule. Text that speaks the language of the visitors is preferred to using jargon restricted to specific industry/category. Use specific words only if the website targets niche audience.

7. Another feature that some web designers goof up on is the color scheme. A mismatched color scheme makes the website garish and reduces the user friendly appeal. Certain amateur website use color schemes like white text on gray background for most of their content which is difficult to read. As far as possible restrict your color scheme to 2 – 3 compatible colors and do not go overboard with a riot of colors just because they are available.

8. Websites are global entities that may have local appeal – a website might be accessed by anyone and everyone ‘- student, businessman, vendor or even people who have no direct interest in the client’s business. It is therefore imperative to incorporate design, content and other related elements in a manner that would appeal all audiences within the client’s niche category. It is obviously impossible to arrive at an exact formula as to who the audience is going to be. By and large stick to the target audience as approved by the client.

9. Content Management System sets the ball rolling so that the website can match steps with the technological progressions. The client should not be at a loss to implement changes in the future if there is no scope for improvement in the website. Keep abreast of the technological changes happening in the web world so that you are not caught on the wrong foot while hosting the website. Moreover outdated design elements, content styles and technological nitty gritty make the website out of place. For this a regular maintenance and upgrading is a must ‘- be it a small business website or the official website of a big conglomerate.

10. Keep an eye on the viruses/bugs that would waste your efforts. To avoid such unpleasant surprises keep testing at each and every level so that you ensure a safe passage to the website. Remember though, that this does not in any way guarantee a foolproof formula as many web designers have come across bugs after completing the necessary process and had to begin from scratch!

The tips mentioned here are based on general guidelines. Many web designers have their own code of conduct. If you wish you can escalate or pare down the list based on your past experiences as they say experience is the best teacher!

With the advent of Wordpress, Blogger and a host of other instant website options packed with free themes and a variety of plugins, pretty much anybody with a computer and an internet connection can turn themselves into a web designer with very little technical knowledge at all. There are some very nice free options out there too and with a little bit of time and some experimentation you could soon have you very own nice looking website up and running all on your own, without the added expense of hiring experts or professional web designers.

But there are times when free templates and drag-and-drop options simply won’t cut it. If you want a website to showcase your business or are building your own revenue stream through the internet then it really is worth considering bringing in the professionals. Here are some advantages to custom built sites over free templates:

Make it Unique

If you really want to stand out from the crowd then having your very own, uniquely designed website will make your business look even more professional. Many free templates or instant create-your-own websites programmes are instantly recognizable, especially if they include links all over them to the source of the free web building services. But your own unique site looks much more professional to people who spend a lot of time on the web. Your own design distinguishes your site from the rest and will stick in the mind of your visitors.

Customize it How You Want

All too often with template-build sites you end up ‘fudging’ around for functionality that you want but can’t quite get right, or having to leave out desirable features because they aren’t included in the template. You are often restricted to fonts, colours and ready-made spaces to insert company logos and so on, but with a custom build you can get it looking just the way you want right from the off. Consistent branding can run throughout the site, with your choice of colours, appropriate fonts and your logo wherever you want it. You can also get many of the features and functions you most want designed into the build instead of scrabbling around for a theme that ticks some of those boxes.

It Can Grow With Your Business

A custom-built site is much easier to tweak, alter and grow compared to a restrictive template. If your business grows as you want it to, or your services or products diversify in different directions than you expected, then you will want to alter your website to reflect this with as little hassle as possible. This is much easier to do with a custom design whereas with a template that doesn’t have the scope to be altered, you may end up starting all over again months down the line rather than just making some simple tweaks.

Boost Your SEO

Search engine optimization is a vital ingredient of your online campaign, as presumably you want your website to be found by visitors and potential customers. Custom built sites often perform much better than generic templates in the search rankings and your developer should be able to ensure the code is as clean as possible and optimized to make it easy for search engine ‘spiders’ to crawl and therefore rank your site appropriately.

If your looking for a custom website then iDream Design, the experts in web design cambridge can help. Delivering content management systems through to copy writing solutions, all your web design needs under one roof.

One element in particular, animation, is one that definitely won’t be going away anytime soon. With that said, there have been many software developers to turn out applications that make it easy for users to create rich animations that are optimized and ready for HTML5, as well as CSS3 and Javascript.

Three titles in particular that have gained attention from developers, designers and users around the web are Hype, Hippo Animator, and Adobe Edge. What’s brilliant about these applications is that they don’t require Flash, Javascript or Silverlight to run, and that can make for a much more broad audience receiving your message. Of course, this also means that mobile devices will be much more likely to render your animations which only propels the mobile web community even further.

So, how do these animation tools stack up against each other, and what can they offer you in terms of animation capabilities and functions?

1. Hippo Animator

Hippo Animator is a pretty simple animation tool that helps even the most inexperienced of users get their ideas out on the web. The website for Hippo Animator advertises their product right on the homepage with an animation that boasts not being supported by Flash, Silverlight, or Javascript. That alone can be impressive by itself.

Once in the animator, it’s very obvious that it’s geared for novice users, but even in that case, it can take awhile to get used to all of its tricks and functions. That applies to any program, though. One of Hippo Animator’s best features is that it is fully functioning on 99.9% of browsers, and this even applies to mobile devices. The software can be used to create rich web content that not only includes animations, but also slideshows, charts, interactive buttons, placeholders for embedded media (such as YouTube videos), and even software demos. You can build almost anything imaginable with Hippo Animator.

2. Hype

Next on the list is Hype, another awesome animator tool that requires no extra plugins or software, such as Flash. What’s neat about Hype, however, is that it is the Mac user’s answer and solution to animating for HTML5. The software features a very Flash-like timeline where you can work with keyframes and transitions to create anything you can think of.

No coding knowledge is needed for Hype, either, which is a plus. Simply create your animation and upload to Dropbox or something similar to preview your project easily online. With Javascript integration and easy exporting, there’s no reason why you’d choose anything other than Hype if you’re working from a Mac.

3. Adobe Edge

Of course, it was only a matter of time before Adobe announced their own rendition of an HTML5 animator. Although Adobe makes it pretty obvious that they aren’t trying to weed out Flash with Edge, Edge is still a great substitution and solution for anyone that needs an alternative or something to reach a broader audience.

Many users that know Adobe for its design suites will probably easily take to Edge as it is designed on a similar interface with similar functions. With the same timeline-like interface that Flash has, many native Flash developers and designers won’t have much trouble finding their way around this software. Adobe Edge provides a “preview” version that users can already start using, and the good news is that Adobe is constantly updating and improving even this preview version. If you use Edge and already love it, you can take comfort in knowing that the real, more featured version will launch soon.
It’s crucial that animation move in such a way for HTML5 that it reaches out to a broader audience while still maintaining its original users. Now that this type of animation is possible without the use of Javascript or Flash, the possibilities are endless.

There are various things to consider such as what size magazine they are interested in printing. Would it be an A3, A4 or A5 size?

Other factors influencing printing magazine costs would be things like, do they need the cover to be a heavier cover page and the other pages either gloss or silk? How many copies are we looking at, between 50 to 200 copies, or 10,000 copies? All these factors will greatly influence the printing costs of the magazines.

Estimation of Printing Magazine Costs

Based on the aforementioned, magazine printers should be able to estimate the cost of printing as required by various small business owners. As long as full specifications of what’s needed are given to the printers in respect of printing magazine costs as follow:

Page Count – 80 pages or 128 page

Type of Cover – Separate cover (Cover printed separately from the inside pages) or self cover (Cover is printed at the same time and on the same stock and press). Note that separate covers are used for high quality printing and is more expensive than self cover, which is often used for smaller page count magazines making printing magazine costs cheaper

Binding – Saddle-stitching (Wire staples used) or perfect binding (Magazines are glued together)

Stock – This depends on the quality of paper used and the weight (cover weight or text weight), where cover weight is normally heavier than text weight. It is best to request samples in this instance as it can get complicated to work out the correct printing magazine costs

Ink – Most magazines are printed in color these days where a 4 color process are being used. Black and white would be classified as one color only

Artwork – Printers want to know what digital file format you intend using. There is a difference in cost between native form (InDesign or QuarkXpress) and hi-resolution (PDFs). The latter is the safer and a more economical way to save on printing magazine costs

Business owners need to remember that the quotes given are an estimation of printing magazine costs to give them a rought idea on what it will cost them to have their magazine printed.

Online Printers Help Businesses Save On Printing Costs

It might be a good idea for small businesses or anyone else that needs to save on printing magazine costs to make use of the services of online printers. This is due to online printers being able to save more on their operating and overhead expenses. What is more, is that online printers are still capable of providing quality printing even though they charge less.

In answer to what it would cost to print magazines, it can be as little $500 for a small print run, depending of course on the number of copies needed, the color and the size of the magazines. Then, for a printing run of 10 000 magazines that are full color and 40 pages, it will cost you about $4000 per quarter. Keep in mind that printing magazine costs depend on your printing needs.
