Making a WordPress multisite network is simply like having your own version of WordPress.com. Like end users of WordPress.com can create their own blogs, your users will also be able to create on your network In case you don’t want to make users create multisite you can make a multisite network with only you as administrator.
In real, a multisite network is a collection of different sites in which all of them are installed in same WordPress installation directory. You can also use and share plugins and theme between these sites. Each of the sites of your network will be virtual sites without their own servers but they have their own separate directories for media uploads and installation along with the separate labels in the database.
When compared to a single WordPress installation, a multisite network site has some additional considerations. Like managing the subdomains and sub-folders. The installation of plugins and themes are done throughout the network and need not put on individual sites.
While opting for a multisite WordPress network, you should take a deep backup of your database and files as major changes can occur there. You will need also to deactivate all your plugins while opting for a multisite. You can again reactivate then after the network created.
To setup WordPress Multisite network, you have to first define the multisite in the wp-config.php file.
To do this, you have to open Wp-config.php file and add a line on above of line which says /* that’s all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */.
If you cannot see this anywhere then add this line above the first line that begins with require or include:
In order to continue, you have to refresh your browser.
This steps simply enables the network setup in your tools menu which is used generally to create a multisite network of WordPress sites screen.
You are free to choose between subdomains and subdirectories but sometimes the existing settings restrict your choice. You can choose any of them and afterward you may reconfigure the network in order to use it.
All you need now is wildcard DNS for the on-demand oriented websites despite the advice that can be on the screen.
What are sub-domains and Sub-directories?
Sub-domains are actually a domain based network in which the network on-demand sites uses subdomains while the sub-directories are a path based network in which these on-demand websites uses path.
You will have following options while setting up multisite network:
- The network details are filled by itself but you are free to make changes anytime.
- The server address of the website will be the domain of the URL which you are using to access the WordPress installation.
- The admin email address will be the common admin email for the whole network.
- The network title will be the title of the whole network.
- Before pressing the ‘install’ button you should double check the details.
- The installer will then perform a check for the wildcard subdomains when you have not configured them already. You can ignore the warning if it does not apply on your network.
In order to enable your network, you need to follow these instructions.
First of all, make a backup of your wp-config.php and .htaccess files unless it is a fresh and new installation and you don’t have to lose anything.
You can do this in these two steps:
- First of all, you should add specified lines to your wp-config.php file. (The extra lines will go just after the line you have added preparing your WordPress)
- Secondly, you will need to add some specified lines to the .htaccess file.
If you don’t have a .htaccess file already then create the same directory as the wp-config.php file.
In case you already have .htaccess file then you should replace the existing WP lines with new ones.
Once you have done all these steps simply login with the link provided, you may need to clear cookies and browser’s cache in order to log in.
Now you will have “My Sites” option on the left of WordPress toolbar. You can see all your site listed there with handy fly-out menus along with the “Network Admin” menu.
That’s all, you have setup your multisite WordPress Network successfully. Hope you like our article, if you already have tried with multisite WordPress network then kindly share your thoughts regarding the experience.
